“Having a kid you can trust, he’s basically a coach on the field,” said Godby head football coach John Holston.
He shines at linebacker, but has suited up anywhere he’s needed to.
“The big thing for him was confidence this year. He got it early and has been rolling with it.”
Rogers is second on the team in total tackles, a presence he has worked hard for.
“Going into the summer I was like this is my last year,” he said. “I have to make it count. Working with my brothers, getting better as a team really is what’s pushing me.”
“I think Trent put on 15-20 pounds of muscle this offseason,” added Holston. “He always worked hard, but I think he made an actual dedication to change his body this offseason and it showed.”
It being his final season in royal blue and white is a big motivator too.
“It’s coming down to our last few games. It means more,” said Rogers. “If I want to continue more weeks in my last year of high school, we have to more weeks in my last year of high school, we have to put more into the games, more effort, go as hard as we can each game because you never know when it’s your last.”
Rogers is part of Godby’s turn around. He’ll leave with that district championship won his junior season, and from this year? A win over Lincoln, and hopefully a deep playoff run.
“I’m glad I stuck it out. It’s going better than ever.”
The same could be said in the classroom, where Rogers has a 3.95 GPA.
“It always comes back down to academics. It’s an extra curricular activity. I’m a scholar athlete. I have to get my work done first before I do anything outside of it.
“He leads by example,” said Holston. “I’ve heard people say leading by example is just people doing their job, but Trent does his job exceptionally well, so he’s a great leader.”
